REC Solar
Founded by a highly educated group out of Cal Poly, REC has grown meteorically over the past few years. They acquired EcoEnergies in 2004 and I have heard that they have an agreement with Home Depot to install solar for their customers.

SolarCity
Solar City is a large, well funded solar start-up, supported by several big Silicon Valley names including one of the founders of Paypal.com. They have been making headlines in the Bay Area by offering large discounts for whole kneiborhoods to go solar. Since they may very well be operating at a loss and their employees are offered stock options as part of their benefits, I get the feeling there is a bit of the old "dot com" business model. The recent appearance of this company may be a sign of how the industry is changing and what direction it is going.

Akeena Solar
Originally based our of Los Gatos, Ca., Akeena Solar now boasts offices in New York and New Jersey. They have one of the most "web 2.0" websites, but that won't mean much to you unless you want to "digg it".

Alternative Energy Investments
Startech Environmental Corp
Of all the truly amazing technologies to be implemented this centaury, I vote for Startech Environmental's "Plasma Waste Converter". This company has a device that turns toxic garbage into electricity and reusable building material. This device will turn all the garbage dumps of the world into playgrounds. Even after all the energy demands of running the Plasma Waste Converter are met, there will still be an oversupply of electricity to be fed back into the local power system.
Energy Conversion Devices Inc
Besides being "the world leader in thin-film amorphous photovoltaics", especially suited to "building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) roofing systems", and producing about 60 MW of solar cells in 2006 with plans to double that production each year for the foreseeable future, Energy Conversion Devices also has fuel cell, high efficiency battery and hydrogen storage divisions.
Evergreen Solar Inc
Producing about 45MW in 2006, Evergreen builds a low environmental foot print solar module. Their modules use less electricity to manufacture, so the environmental payback is accelerated. They have also made an effort to minimize their packaging. Many solar modules come 1 or 2 per thick cardboard box. This impacts the solar installers work time, because the modules need to be un package removed from every box and the huge stack of cardboard needs to be removed from the job site.
Interface Inc
Why is a manufacturer of carpets on a list of alternative energy companies? Under the visionary leadership of Ray Anderson, Interface intends to "be the first company that, by its deeds, shows the entire industrial world what sustainability is in all its dimensions". In other words they have made a vow to have an environmental impact of zero by the year 2020.
Spire Corp
Spire manufactures solar manufacturing equipment. They build solar assembly lines and supply manufacturing equipment for more than 90% of the photovoltaic module manufacturing companies around the world. If you are looking to start a solar manufacturing business, Spire has a turnkey system. With the massive increase in solar manufacturing, I bet they are busy.
SunPower Corp
SunPower is a high efficiency solar cell and solar module manufacturer, which originally built high efficiency cells for NASA. Now they are in the grid-tied solar business with an impressive line of solar modules and inverters.
